Le malattie osteoarticolari hanno un enorme impatto nel mondo. “Health 21”, la politica della salute per tutti per le regioni europee dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS), identifica la lotta alle malattie muscolo-scheletriche come un obiettivo primario. Tuttavia, i sistemi sanitari di gran parte dei paesi europei non ritengono questa una priorità. Per porre rimedio a questa incongruenza, le Nazioni Unite, l’OMS, alcuni governi, ed associazioni di pazienti ed operatori sanitari hanno dichiarato il periodo 2000-2010 decade dell’osso e delle articolazioni (Bone and Joint Decade o BJD).
